  2. The teacher didn't care about Gregory. "[She] thought I was stupid." "...thought I was a troublemaker." Afterwards, Gregory explained that he just wanted someone to know he existed, and that he was so hungry he couldn't think. The teacher never bothered to find out. "Sit down, Richard, you're disturbing the class." She was mad when he tried to donate money and pretend he had a dad, even calling him out "...you don't have a Daddy." She didn't care about this boy at all.

  3. The teacher is condescending, hateful, racist, and hard-hearted. She treats Gregory less than everyone else. Ex: Making him stay after school to clean the board, he doesn't know but she is doing that against him.

  4. The teacher does not like Gregory. During the early 1900's the US was very biased against African Americans. The Caucasians were often very racist, as is evident through the teacher's responses to Gregory. She refers to to African Americans and poorer people as "Your kind" and was quick to get angry at him for speaking.

  5. The teachers attitude toward Gregory is discriminatory and disrespectful. She sounds as if he is a burden to everyone. She calls him out saying he doesn't have a father.

  6. Her attitude towards Gregory is both annoyed and spiteful. She uses the word "furthermore" before telling the whole class he doesn't have a daddy. The connotation of the word "furthermore" is one that says it will not be a pleasant statement.

  7. The teachers attitude is rude and mean. She doesn't provide him a chance to prove himself that he could give the money. And she had no right to tell the whole class that he had no dad. She could have just talked to him and explained why he couldn't give the money after class.

  8. The teacher was did not like Gregory. She made him sit in the "stupid" seat because he couldn't spell, read, or do arithmetic. She didn't bother to give him special attention to help him. Also, she always made him stay after school in order to clean the blackboard. Gregory thought she liked him because she did that but those were the actions of hate. Also, she stated that he didn't have a father, unsympathetically.

  9. The teacher was not very teacher-y. In that, I mean that she was not a kind, caring, or sympathetic mentor to her students. This is obviously exhibited when she was rude and humiliating toward Gregory ("We all know you don't have a Daddy") in front of the class. Her attitude is probably describable as indifferent toward his situation and detached from he himself.

  10. The teacher was a complete jerk to him and she also just told the whole class he has no father which was wrong

--Oh, yes it was wrong! I completely agree, the teacher was a jerk, she had no concept of discreetness.

  13. The teacher didn't like Gregory because of her harsh comment to him and how he is fatherless. Gregory thought she like him because she made him clean the blackboard, but this is an example of her displeasure with him. He knew that the teacher thought he was "stupid". Instead of feeling sorry for Gregory, she had hatred.

  14. The teachers attitude toward Gregory is racist and disrespectful. She embarrasses him in front of the whole class.

  15. The teacher saw him as a distraction and annoyance to the class. That she just needs to put up with him for another year and then he is gone. This is shown by the teacher constantly shutting down anything he tried to say and anything the child does is a nuisance.

You could have elaborated a little bit more. But great response. I think you could have used more descriptive words though

Not to mention points out all of his faults to the rest of the class.

  18. I totally agree with you, Anna R, because the teacher showed her hatred for him through her actions including making him clean the blackboard (which Gregory thought that meant she liked him) as well as when he wanted to donate money in class and she totally shut him down and shamed him.

  19. Reply to Josh, I agree that the teacher sounded annoyed by Gregory and she thought that he was a burden to the class.

  20. Logan:
That post is very accurate. The only problem is, many times there could be an entire class that was treated like this. During this time in history, entire schools were devoted to African Americans and occasionally a white teacher would hate the entire class and find them good for nothing.

  21. The teachers attitude toward Gregory is very rude and even considered careless and not very concealing about his personal life. And that can be seen when she announces to the whole class that he does not have a father. It can also be seen that she is very unstable to be a teacher because she doesn't attend to Gregory needs like providing help for him if he cant read or spell, or being concerned about his well being.

  22. The teacher definitely looks down on Gregory and “his kind.” She made him wash the blackboards on Friday afternoons and would not give him the time of day to speak. “The teacher thought I was stupid.” “The teacher thought I was a troublemaker.” You can tell that she does not understand Gregory. Of course he did not truly have the money to give, but she just turned and angrily passed a comment that “If your Daddy can give fifteen dollars you have no business being on relief.” She does not realize that there is a reason he is acting out like he is and this causes her to get frustrated with him.

Good observations! I like the example you use, showing that there are more examples than people think. It shows how the teacher was cruel and racist.

  24. Cruz: The teachers attitude is rude and mean. She doesn't provide him a chance to prove himself that he could give the money. And she had no right to tell the whole class that he had no dad. She could have just talked to him and explained why he couldn't give the money after class.

I agree that the teacher’s attitude is rude and mean. I think that though she knew he could not give the $15, it may have been for the best that she did not allow him to give it because his family could have used it. I very much so agree that it was wrong of her to tell the class that he had no dad. But not only that, she said it in a heartless manner. I think you are right, talking to him about it in private would have been the best way to work out the situation.

  26. The teacher's attitude is very rude and judgmental towards Gregory. The teacher thought he was stupid and could not spell, do arithmetic, or read. She was very judgmental towards Gregory. The teacher is also rude when Gregory stood up in class and raised his hand and she said "What is it now?" She addressed Gregory very rudely. She did not ask him politely what he wanted. Also, when Gregory told the teacher that he had money from his Daddy, her nostrils began getting big and her lips began getting thin and her eyes were opening wide, and she said "we know you don't have a Daddy." That was very rude of her to point that out in front of the entire class. Gregory thought that the teacher liked him when she would pick him to wash the blackboard on Friday. However, the teacher was clearly not the person Gregory thought she was.

  27. Rachael: I agree that she didn't like Gregory at all for she kept him at the studied desk. Away from everyone else and made him feel different from everyone else as well. I also agree that she didn't like his kind at all.

  28. To Dr. Anna R.

I agree that the teacher didn't care for Gregory. She did so many mean things to him that I can't believe he didn't see it before. However, he took a positive view to it, thinking that she liked him for picking him to stay after every Friday.

I agree with you Cruz that the teacher was rude towards Gregory. She should have given Gregory a chance to prove himself and give the money that he had brought with him.

I don't really agree that the teacher was racist. I mean, maybe its just the way I interpreted the story, but I wasn't picking up the 'racist vibe.'
