Shame Question # 2

2. What does Gregory mean by "shame"?  What precisely was he ashamed of, and what in particular did he learn from the incident?

  1. What he means by shame is an act that he is ashamed of and would like to forget or undo. He is ashamed of making a fool of himself in front of the girl he liked. He also learned to be honest and not to lie about your parents.

  2. Shame is feeling embarrassed or hurt because of a foolish action. When Gregory says that he was ashamed, he was saying that he was ashamed that he had no father like all of the other children. Through this event, he learned how strong the feeling of shame is.

  3. Gregory highlights the first time he ever felt shame- a mixture of embarrassment and inferiority. He was particularly ashamed of not having a daddy to provide for his family- as a result, they were very poor and on relief. He learned that sometimes you felt ashamed of something- no matter if you had any say in it at all.

  4. He embarrassed himself in front of everyone in the class. He was trying to fit in with everyone else who had a father and people then felt sorry for him.

  5. Gregory means shame in that he felt worthless and like an outcast from everyone else. He was signaled out by his teacher and she remorsefully brought him down to the lowest level that she could. Because of this he was embarrassed of who he was and of his people. He lost his pride in who he was and tried to distance himself away from them. He lost sight of who he was.
In the words of the Great Rafiki "Remember who you are Simba."

  6. By "shame," he meant that prior to this incident he had never felt embarrassed or self-conscious about his living situation. He had always, well, lived with it, and he hadn't given any second thought to how he went about his day. I believe that Gregory learned the value of shame, in that he now knows to be more abashed about what he does and says.

  7. Gregory was ashamed of his situation and how he was poor and he didn't have a father like all of the other children. He walked down other streets so he wouldn't have to face those with money.

  9. What Gregory means by the word shame is the way he felt when the teacher told everyone in his class that he had no daddy. Gregory felt shamed that he didn't have a daddy. And he looked as a fool in front of his crush and everyone else in the room. For the teacher had called him poor as well. And he felt shameful that he didn't have a dad to provide him with the things he needed to be proper. He learned that day the power of shame and to be embarrassed of not having the things that everyone else had.

  10. "Shame" for Gregory means a feeling of being inferior to everything and everyone around you for a specific event, character trait, or physical attribute. Gregory feels shame by the teachers statement, which proved that Gregory was lower than everyone else in the class. He learned that people will look at you a certain way once that way is expressed openly.

  11. To the narrator, shame was not being good enough. Unlike the other children in his class, he didn't have a father. His teacher told the entire class such. Due to this, he felt shame. Everyone felt bad for him, and he didn't want them to. He was ashamed of not having a father, and not being like the rest of the class, being different. He learned that what shame was and how to cope with it.

  12. Auslynn, I didn't see it that way, but that is a good point. I think that he didn't see his shame until he went to school and he started to care about what he looked like and how he presented himself, especially around Helene. After the teacher's comment, he changed and was truly ashamed of who he was and how he lived.

  13. What Gregory means by his title of shame is that when he was younger he felt ashamed because of many aspects in this life. One of these things was was that his family lived on relief because he would be embarrassed to go and receive food and cloths from the relief truck. He felt ashamed that he didn't have a father and that his teacher had pointed that out. I think that one thing in particular that he learned from his incident was that he shouldn't have tried to be some one that he wasn't.

  15. He meant shame as the physical feeling of shame. the pain of not being able to afford food or several pairs of clothes and the cold. He learned to associate shame with a location and a person

  18. He is ashamed that he did not have a dad like everyone. He has never before felt this emotion because he lived a calm life before he went to school. Now that he goes to school he feels ashamed because he starts to realize the negative parts of his life.

  20. By "shame," Gregory meant that he felt embarrassed. He had a painful feeling of humiliation. He was ashamed when the teacher called him out and said that "we know you don't have a Daddy," especially in front of Helen Tucker. He was particularly ashamed that he did not have a Daddy who could provide for his family as the other students did. Richard lost his pride after his teacher's comment, and he learned the true meaning of shame and how it could change your life. He also learned that there was shame everywhere.

I agree that Richard was embarrassed in front of the class. He also learned more about the real meaning of shame and how it affects your life.

  22. By shame, Gregory is referring to deep embarrassment. Embarrassment that stuck with him so much that he felt other people saw it. “Now there was shame everywhere. It seemed like the whole world had been inside that classroom…”
The shame came from realizing that the teacher does not like him and would not give him the time to speak and skipped right over him. I think that he probably learned not to try and impress people by saying you have something you don’t.

--Like how you mentioned the 'taking other streets so no one has to look at him' that's an excellent example of behavior due to shame!!

Andreea, I agree with what you said about him being ashamed about not having a daddy to provide. I also agree that he learned all of that about shame from that one incident. He began by saying “I never learned hate at home, or shame” and ends by saying “Now there was shame everywhere.”

  26. Cruz, I agree completely with you that his reason of shame was because of his teacher calling him out in front of the entire class, including his crush.

That is a pretty good post! Your post made me think about how the paper was one on self discovery. I understood that the paper was on him feeling upset, but I hadn't thought of it in a self-discovery sense.

I love this definition of shame pertaining to this story. It reflects how Gregory feels and thinks perfectly. It is an accurate representation of the word shame for this story.

  30. Madison: I agree that he did get embarrassed in front of his class mates. And mostly in front of his crush. I think that was the most shameful part that he went though. Because he didn't want her to know the private things about his life.

  31. To Madison~~

I don't believe he made a fool of himself, he believe it was his teacher who made a fool out of him. He just wanted to help out and look good in front of Helene and be accepted with the others who had a child. It was the teacher who decided to ruin his facade by telling him he didn't have a father.

I think your interpretation is pretty similar to mine, so obviously I agree with you. I think your application of The Lion King to this essay is a little...peculiar, but interesting nonetheless. Good work.
